Earlier this year, we took a chance and purchased a used CNC 5-axis lathe, with hopes of expanding our ability to machine our own parts in a precise, repeatable and consistent fashion. Low and behold, our Okuma Multus B300, although a bit older, is still in great shape and is proving its worth here at Headquarters. The picture of the bars is just one example of a series of precision parts we made yesterday that we were able to drill and rigid-tap (on both ends) in record time. Something we only dreamed of before we had this machine. Because we invested in the Okuma lathe, we can now make this part along with many other parts in record time for our newest Harmony prototype!
We've also included two pictures of a creative setup which will allow us to feed a 12-foot piece of 5/8" bar stock into the lathe through a secured 3/4" pipe. The lathe will machine one end precisely, then grab and pull about 15" into the sub chuck, cut it off the main bar, and finally perform secondary operations on the other side. The end result will be a precisely machined part to the exact length we need with all of the features done on both ends, in one simple setup. This process then repeats again and again until the 12-foot bar is used up. It feels like magic, but it really boils down to a great machine and the knowledge to use it properly! Thanks to our great team, we've got it covered!
We're excited about our continued progress on our MK III prototypes and hope you can feel our energy building with each and every update. Please stay tuned for more!
Why wait for change, when you can BE the change?
